You wait days for a superyacht and then three come along at once. In the foreground is 98 metre long Aviva, owned by London born billionaire Joe Lewis who was recently indicted in the USA accused of insider trading. In the middle is the small but perfectly formed Constance, at 46 metres, the boat is a frequent visitor to Dartmouth. At the back is Elysian, 61 metres long and owned by John C Henry, who also owns Liverpool FC. Until recently Joe Lewis owned Tottenham Hotspurs so this could so easily have been the first match of this Premiership season. Aviva had the bragging rights, but size isn't everything.

Over the years I have snapped a fair few large boats with their underwater lighting displays. So was somewhat disappointed photographically speaking when Aviva failed to light up on it's first overnight. But then on Tuesday, just at dusk on came the lights. Five minutes later they went off. No more money for the meter ?

You'll remember the bird shit issue for superyacht Aviva ? (that pic can be seen further down the page). On the craft's return from its little trip down the coast - to Strete - they came up with a solution. A bird of prey kite and an owl (which moved). Major construction works underway at Inverdart Boathouse. This Beretta T21 rock drill was being delivered by boat. It took a couple of attempts as the weather on the first day was not condusive to crane a couple of tons of machinery on to scaffolding. Still, it got there in the end. And there was me thinking Beretta made guns. (Actually yes they do, Beretta is the oldest active firearms manufacturer in the world. They also own companies which make rock drills)

Coastal rowing on Saturday was fun to watch. The crews, foursomes, doubles and solo started by the Royal Dart Yacht Club and headed out and around the Mewstone before heading back to the club. After all that, many of the crews came in side by side for some remarkably close finishes.

A change of pace, more of a quick trot actually. Loads of sheep are residing in the field above the Golf House. But when they move, they trot off in straight lines. They're not feeding, they are walking fast, probably to the feed. So why the straight lines ? Is it simply true, that they follow like sheep ?

Extraordinary touching scenes in the river on Monday evening as friends and family of Dartmouth rowing stalwart Lynne Leader said goodbye to her scattering her ashes on the Dart. The Regatta Committee fired cannons in her honour and the church bells rang throughout the ceremony.And on the water there was lots of singing, cheering and probably a bit of crying. A firework too.

The weather plays a big part in Regatta and this morning it decided to keep Kingswear in the dark (well, gloom) for a bit longer than Dartmouth. The mist came low, all but obliterating the other side of the river. Even superyacht Aviva disappeared for a while.

The PS Waverley, is the only seagoing paddle steamer left in the world. She has been restored to her 1947 appearance, the year she entered service. At 73 metres long, she dwarks the Kingswear Castle 'our' resident paddle steamer. Waverley now travels round Britain offering sightseeing cruises and today arrived in Dartmouth for a three day visit.
